Speed Scouting Soybean Aphids

Soybean Aphid Description

Winged Aphid

The soybean aphid is the only aphid in North America that will develop large, persistent colonies on soybeans. Therefore, any cluster of aphids found on soybeans must be soybean aphids. These colonies are found early in an infestation on the bottoms of the youngest leaves, then spreading through the plant as the population builds. There are both wingless and winged forms. Wingless soybean aphid adults are about 1/16 inch in length, plae yellow or green, and have dark-tipped cornicles (tail pipes) near the end of the abdomen. The winged form has a shiny black head and thorax with a dark green abdomen and black cornicles. Aphids feed though piercing-sucking mouthparts.
